Truck manufacturers all across the globe are rapidly shifting their attention from the Petrol and Diesel models of old to all new environmentally friendly versions with staggering results. This shift comes as more and more governments are putting legislation in place with plans to lower emissions by up to 80% in an effort to slow climate change.
Companies such as Scania, Mercedes Benz, Volvo and DAF are leading the pack when it comes to innovations in technology which are allowing for even greater efficiency than the classic fuel versions. Last year saw a huge increase of e-trucks being developed with companies such as Scania announcing an all electric truck which has a range of 250km on a single charge. Mercedes Benz have also been at the fore front of this increase with it’s plans to roll out electric trucks for use from this year after an extensive two year testing period.
Iveco and Volvo have also made strides in gas powered trucks which are another great alternative to standard Petrol and Diesel vehicles. These gas trucks are just as efficient as there electric counterparts and look like they could be a very worth while investment for large haulage companies due to their money saving potential. The taxes governments are placing on larger haulage vehicles means it is becoming more and more inevitable that companies will start changing over to these low emission models as a way to both save money and to help stop the acceleration of climate change.
The potential for higher profit margins and lower parts costs are also huge bonuses which contribute to the growing list of advantages this new generation of trucks brings. This new wave of technology and advancement in the development of these trucks will all but spell an end to the trucks of the past, it is becoming more and more clear that the emphasis now is becoming greener as a society and thus move forward into a safer future.
In 2019 the UK became the first major world economy to announce laws which aim to bring net emissions to zero by 2050, this is a huge step towards a greener planet and puts pressure on the rest of the world to follow suit. The haulage industry will be a major player in these changes and companies will be put under more and more scrutiny. Amazon have made a significant investment in 10,000 fully electronic vans which they aim to have on the road by 2022.
The future looks bright for haulage and transport across the globe and it will be interesting to see how far we can go in the quest for a healthier planet.
